S04P (S04I and S04P) bathymetry: Two cruises: 1. S03/S04I ASCII navigation and bathymetry data files were obtained from Susan Wijffels via Jim Crease on 11/13/98. Updated 9/19/2003 L. Talley Expedition designation (ExpoCode) 09AR9404_1 Chief scientist and affiliation Steve Rintoul/CSIRO* Ship RSV Aurora Australis Cruise dates 1994.DEC.13 to 1995.FEB.02 Ports of call Casey "S04I_bathy_original.zip" is the zipped original data file au9404.dep (format specified below) "S04I_bathy_edit.zip" is the edited original data file au9404_s4i_edit.dep (format specified below) (only the portion of au9404 used for S4I; for complete file please look at cruise S03) "S04I_bathy_gdc.dat" is the edited data in Geological Data Center format, including corrected depths at all recorded locations. 2. S04P ASCII navigation and bathymetry data file was obtained from SIO Geological Data Center (Uta Albright) 9/23/03 Line S04P ,IOFFE6 Full Size ExpoCode 90KDIOFFE6_1 Ship/Country AKADEMIK IOFFE/ RUS Chief Scientists Koshlyakov/IORAN : Richman/OSU Cruise Date 1992-02-14 "S04P_bathy_original.zip" is the zipped original data file mgd77.IOFE01IF In this orginal data file, times that have meters and not 2way travel time are not corrected ( unspecified correction ) "S04P_bathy_gdc.dat" is the edited data in Geological Data Center format, including corrected depths at all recorded locations. 3. Combined S04I and S04P cruises has a small gap between the last and first stations. Bathymetry between them is interpolated from Smith and Sandwell 4. For the combined cruises (taken together called S04P): "S04P_bathydist.dat" is the decimated bathymetry file, projected onto straight lines between station positions, used for plotting the vertical sections. "S04P_sta_bdep.dat" is the station list, with corrected bottom pressures for each station, based on the WHP sum file (station summary file) ----------------------------------------------- Format specifications Ascii Navigation format for "file_bathy_gdc.dat" latitude (xxx.xxx) longitude (xxxx.xxx) unc depth (xxxxx.x) meters corr depth (xxxxx.x) meters month (ii) day (iii) day of the month year (ii) assuming 1900 century hour (ii) minute (ii) second (ii) Julian date (xxxxxxx.xxxxx) Format of "s03_bathydist.dat" ist (iii) station number (set to 1) dist (ffffff.f) distance (km) along section lat (dddddd.mm) decimal latitude lon (dddddd.mm) decimal longitude dpt (ddddd.d) depth meters Format of s03_sta_bdep.dat station (iiii) station number distance (xxxxx.x) km along section latitude (xxx.xxx) longitude (xxxx.xxx) pressure (xxxx.x) dbar OR depth in meters ------------------------------------------------------------- Original data format: column parameter 1 decimal time (0.0=midnight on December 31st) 2 day 3 month 4 year 5 hour 6 minute 7 second 8 latitude (decimal degrees,+ve=north, -ve=south) 9 longitude(decimal degrees,+ve=east, -ve=west) 10 depth (m), using a sound speed of 1498 m/s, and measured from the water surface Data are instantaneous readings at each 10 second interval. There is a line of data for each 10 second interval. -999.0 = null value All depth have been standardised to a sound speed of 1498 m/s -------Notes on editing and decimation----- au9404_edit.dep All lines with missing depths removed. Bathymetry data are clean although gappy. Problem with navigation apparent but retained for region between stations 74 and 79 S03_bathy_gdc.dat portion of au9404_edit.dep appropriate for S03 selected. Data decimated to every 6th point, or approximately 1/minute (except that there were many data gaps removed initially) All ship speeds less than 2 knots and greater than 30 knots removed (to remove all data from station locations) S03_bathy_gdc_clean.dat S03_bathy_gdc.dat with loop at stations 86-88 removed, and all backtracks in latitude removed.
