P15N bathymetry data Updated 12/19/02 LDT ASCII navigation and bathymetry data file was obtained from Frank Whitney, IOS BC 10/30/98, in four separate data files. The depths have had a preliminary correction applied, but this will need to be redone. See notes below. This is a very noisy data set, and it isn't clear that the editing process is even close to complete. Expocode: 18DD9403_1 and 18DD9403_2 Chief Scientists: John Garrett and Howard Freeland Ship: R/V John P. Tully Ports: Leg 1: Dutch Harbor, Alaska to Honolulu Leg 2: Honoulu to Pago Pago, American Samoa Dates (Leg 1) 1994.SEP.06 to 1994.OCT.10 (Leg 2) 1994.OCT.13 to 1994.NOV.10 "p15n_1.dat, p15n_2.dat, p15n_3.dat, p15n_4.dat" original data from IOS p15n_4.dat is bathymetry on the return to Canada and does not follow the vertical section. "p15n_1_edit.dat", etc. are edited versions of the original data - see comments below "P15N_1_bathy_gdc.dat", etc. are the original data, reformatted to standard format. ---------------------------------------------------------- Format specifications for P15N: Ascii Navigation format for the original data "p15n_1.dat" Information is included in the header records 1 TIME DDD.DDDDDD 249.6153 271.9778 2 TIME_HOUR HOURS 0 23 3 TIME_MIN MINUTES 0 60 4 GPS_LAT DEGREES 36.5016 54.0535 5 GPS_LON DEGREES -166.5291 -123.2076 6 SHIP_HEADING DEGREES 0 359 7 SHIP_SPEED KNOTS 0 14.1 8 TEMPERATURE:CELL 'DEGREES C (ITS68)' 7.179 21.331 9 SALINITY PPM 18.479 34.389 10 LF_DEPTH METRES 0 8901.6 11 REL_WIND_DIR DEGREES .1 360 12 REL_WIND_SPEED KNOTS .1 79.9 13 TRUE_WIND_SPEED KNOTS .1 81.8 14 TRUE_WIND_DIRECTION DEGREES 0 360 15 FLUORO_S V 0 32.767 16 FLUORO_R V 0 .99 17 AIR_PRESSURE millibars 967.26 1025.51 Ascii Navigation format for the original data "p15n_2.dat, p15n_3.dat, p15n_4.dat" 1 TIME DDD-HHMMSS 271.9875 286.7861 2 TIME_HOUR HOURS 0 23 3 TIME_MIN MINUTES 0 60 4 GPS_LAT DEGREES 20.8973 36.5388 5 GPS_LON DEGREES -166.0083 -157.8636 6 SHIP_HEADING DEGREES 0 359 7 SHIP_SPEED KNOTS 0 12.5 8 COND_RATIO ' ' -1.1224 1.8117 9 TEMPERATURE:CELL 'DEGREES C (ITS68)' 20.665 31.148 10 SALINITY PPM 2.228 56.834 11 LF_DEPTH METRES 0 5991.8 12 REL_WIND_DIR DEGREES .1 360 13 REL_WIND_SPEED KNOTS .1 48 14 TRUE_WIND_SPEED KNOTS .1 54.5 15 TRUE_WIND_DIRECTION DEGREES 0 359.9 16 FLUORO_S V 0 4.061 17 FLUORO_R V 0 .991 18 AIR_PRESSURE millibars 994.78 1014.66 Ascii Navigation format for the original data "file_bathy_gdc.dat" latitude (xxx.xxx) longitude (xxxx.xxx) unc depth (xxxxx.x) meters corr depth (xxxxx.x) meters month (ii) (set to zero here) julian day (iii) day of the year year (ii) assuming 1900 century hour (ii) minute (ii) second (ii) Julian date (xxxxxxx.xxxxx) ---------------------------------------------------------- Data comments for P15N From MinkleyB@pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca Wed Aug 7 08:43 PDT 2002 To: lynne@gyre.ucsd.edu Subject: RE: Sounder depth from SAIL data, cruise 94-03 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-MailScanner: Passed Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Length: 1012 Hi Lynne The correction we put into the sounder would be for North East Pacific water, i.e. Station Papa (50 N, 145 W) I do not know if we changed the profile when we got into Southern waters. Bernard ------------ (n.b. the profile was not changed for southern waters; thus these data are not Carter corrected. Will need to uncorrect back to original and the apply Carter corrections.) ------------ General comment on data quality: p15n_1.dat: data vacillates between 4000 and 6000 m with a rough idea of the actual bathymetry within that range p15n_2.dat: vacillates between 5000 and 6000 m, again very noisy p15n_3.dat: vacillates down to 6000 m, again very noisy p15n_4.dat: noisy, but looks pretty good. Full latitude range but does not follow ship track. I don't think it will be useful to use these files for the vertical section. Data outliers removed in the "edit" and "gdc" files: p15n_1.dat: many, many problems, so no edited file created p15n_2_edit.dat has these lines deleted from p15n_2.dat: line|GDC format string: 7334 21.013 -164.088 -99.0 5590.2 0 282 94 0 46 0 1994282.03200 0.70 Note however that there are many more problems than this. p15n_3_edit.dat has these lines deleted from p15n_3.dat: line|GDC format string: 864 21.127 -161.994 -99.0 5706.2 0 287 94 23 23 0 1994287.97430 8.60 3179 21.248 -157.962 -99.0 3835.4 0 289 94 19 13 0 1994289.80070 10.80 2184 21.251 -157.934 -99.0 3550.6 0 289 94 19 23 0 1994289.80760 10.30 3114 20.721 -163.686 -99.0 4672.2 0 291 94 2 23 0 1994291.09930 10.80 7215 11.134 -168.469 -99.0 3625.4 0 296 94 19 5 0 1994296.79510 10.20 9195 6.001 -168.744 -99.0 1758.3 0 299 94 13 5 0 1994299.54510 0.70 9196 6.000 -168.744 -99.0 3299.8 0 299 94 13 7 0 1994299.54650 0.80 9197 6.000 -168.743 -99.0 3361.2 0 299 94 13 9 0 1994299.54790 0.70 9198 6.001 -168.743 -99.0 3424.6 0 299 94 13 11 0 1994299.54930 0.90 9200 6.002 -168.743 -99.0 3545.2 0 299 94 13 15 0 1994299.55210 0.80 Note however that there are many more problems than this. p15n_4_edit.dat has these lines deleted from p15n_4.dat: line|GDC format string: 2270 -0.961 -164.236 -99.0 6581.1 0 320 94 1 33 0 1994320.06460 12.60 4035 10.548 -158.921 -99.0 3046.2 0 322 94 12 23 0 1994322.51600 11.10 6023 19.860 -154.958 -99.0 4398.9 0 325 94 6 39 0 1994325.27710 6.30 6025 19.865 -154.951 -99.0 4619.7 0 325 94 6 43 0 1994325.27980 7.00 7034 22.502 -150.060 -99.0 3789.3 0 326 94 16 21 0 1994326.68120 10.40 7035 22.505 -150.053 -99.0 3564.6 0 326 94 16 23 0 1994326.68260 11.30 7305 23.270 -148.292 -99.0 6936.9 0 327 94 1 23 0 1994327.05760 10.80 7528 23.887 -146.819 -99.0 4285.2 0 327 94 8 49 0 1994327.36740 12.30 7617 24.130 -146.227 -99.0 4251.6 0 327 94 11 47 0 1994327.49100 10.90 11823 37.753 -123.620 -99.0 5245.2 0 333 94 7 59 0 1994333.33260 11.40 11826 37.767 -123.640 -99.0 6433.5 0 333 94 8 5 0 1994333.33680 11.50 11827 37.771 -123.647 -99.0 5254.5 0 333 94 8 7 0 1994333.33820 11.10 13106 46.436 -125.005 -99.0 5297.7 0 335 94 2 45 0 1994335.11460 12.30 13132 46.613 -124.984 -99.0 5242.8 0 335 94 3 37 0 1994335.15070 10.9 13134 46.627 -124.985 -99.0 6012.6 0 335 94 3 41 0 1994335.15350 12.50 13135 46.633 -124.986 -99.0 4939.2 0 335 94 3 43 0 1994335.15480 10.20 13136 46.640 -124.986 -99.0 4838.1 0 335 94 3 45 0 1994335.15630 10.00 13184 46.975 -125.000 -99.0 6597.6 0 335 94 5 21 0 1994335.22290 11.50 13185 46.982 -125.000 -99.0 5275.5 0 335 94 5 23 0 1994335.22430 11.80 13300 47.794 -125.000 -99.0 4711.5 0 335 94 9 13 0 1994335.38400 11.80 13630 48.653 -123.452 -99.0 6303.9 0 335 94 20 13 0 1994335.84230 0.70
